Hey Bald Eagles!

As elections ended on Nov. 4, many eyes were on NYC. Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani won the mayoral election, and many are saying this could mark the start of a greater trend within the Democratic Party. Mamdani shocked the nation earlier this year when he beat former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo in the primaries, securing the party’s nomination.

He ran on the promise of making NYC affordable for everyday working-class people and plans to do so by enacting the policies he proposed a rent freeze, free citywide bus service, universal childcare, and a flat 2% tax on New Yorkers who make more than one million dollars a year.

Many fear that Mamdani is too progressive and won’t deliver results due to his inexperience, but he now has something to prove that democratic socialism can work for the working class.

This election also points to a broader trend among voters, one that could shape the Democratic Party’s future. It shows that people are willing to vote for democratic socialist candidates, which isn’t surprising given the past support for figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

This rising trend of support for progressive candidates could lead to more victories for the Democratic Party in the future. A prime example is the young voters’ huge role in Mamdani’s victory. The big question is whether the party will back progressive candidates in upcoming elections, such as the 2026 midterms.

We’ll have to wait and see if Zohran Mamdani can deliver on his promises to New York City’s working-class residents.

See ya, Bald Eagles!
