Lock Haven University hosted Accepted Student Day on March 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Over 100 students were accepted and registered for the event.

Upon arrival to campus, accepted students and their families checked in at the Student Recreation Center. They learned about what the university’s clubs and offices offer through the involvement fair.

Prospective secondary education English major Megan Claar said, “I am coming here because I got recruited for swimming. I am excited to swim for a college team rather than just a high school team.” Aside from swim team recruitment, proximity to home and small class size attracted Claar to Lock Haven.

From the Student Recreation Center to Price Auditorium, the soon-to-be Bald Eagles took their first ride on the trolley. Stephen Lee, vice president of enrollment management, gave welcome remarks to accepted students.

“For many accepted students, they know they are coming, and they are just looking forward to the next step in their career,” he said.

Lee points out that many incoming Bald Eagles are undeclared when they first enter college because they want to explore available options. However, some incoming freshmen know where they want to start their academic journey. “For many students, they have picked a major and today they are going to connect to faculty and confirm that it is the right choice,” Lee said.

The welcome address prepared accepted students for breakout groups to attend class simulations. The university offered eight class simulations:

  • Molecules that Make Scents
  • Flowers and Pollen
  • Tell Your Story and Change the World: An Introduction to a Creative Media Career
  • Why are we Sports Fans?
  • Forensic Geology: Using Geological Trace Evidence to Solve a Murder
  • Visual Arts Class Simulation
  • This class will Really Get on Your NERVES!
  • Microbes and Me: A World Connected

Media professor Matthew McKeague offered the introduction to a creative media profession session. He said, “Much like tasting a spoonful of soft serve ice cream or tasting a sample of hors d’oeuvres at a restaurant, the Accepted Student Day provides a valuable opportunity for potential students to see what it will be like in college.”

Following the interactive department sessions, accepted students received their first meal at Bentley dining hall. After lunch, the Lock Haven admissions team presented potential students with residence hall tours throughout Smith Hall and Fairview Suites.

Admissions ambassador Jocelyn Freeman gave tours from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Freeman voices how she met her two best friends and roommates on Accepted Student Day. “Accepted Student Day gives incoming freshmen the opportunity to get to know people their age. It feels a lot less lonely once you become acquainted with the campus and really learn what it feels like to be a Lock Haven student,” she said.
