LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s basketball programs
hosted an Alumni Weekend to celebrate the 10th annual Night at the Races
fundraiser on Feb. 15. This event brought together former players,
coaches, and supporters who returned to The Haven to celebrate the past, present, and future
of LHU basketball.

The day began on the court, as both the women’s and men’s teams secured victories. The
women’s team defeated Shepherd University 71-60, and the men also won 67-62. Alumni filled
the stands to support.

Following these games, the celebration continued with the 10th annual Night at the
Races, a derby-style tradition where alumni and supporters placed bets on simulated horse
races while enjoying food, drinks, and socializing. The event serves as a crucial fundraiser for
both basketball programs, with 65% of the proceeds directly benefiting the teams. Tickets are
$35 per person and include food, drinks, races, cash prizes, and more! Attendees can also
sponsor a horse for $25 or a race for $200. Additionally, a table sponsorship is available for
$500, which includes eight individual seats.

A key contributor to the success of the fundraiser was Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE), which once
was a fraternity at Lock Haven. They are some of the largest donors of the evening. The
generosity of alumni and supporters helps the basketball programs continue to thrive, providing
resources for scholarships, equipment, and team travel.

Women’s basketball head coach Jennifer Smith reflected on the event’s impact. “We’ve been
hosting Night at the Races for 10 years, and it typically generates over $5,000 annually. The
financial and participatory support from our alumni means everything—it shows their
commitment to the success of our programs and our student-athletes.”

Coach Smith also shared what she loves most about the event. “The best part about Night at
the Races is the opportunity to reconnect with former players and long-time supporters. It’s a
night filled with reminiscing, sharing stories, and feeling the strong sense of community that
makes Lock Haven basketball special. More importantly, it helps us build for the future while
honoring the past.”

The Lock Haven basketball community is excited to carry on this great tradition and make sure
that the history of both programs continues for many years to come after another fantastic Night
at the Races.
