Lock Haven University (LHU) officially welcomed students back on August 22. With the start of the school year comes the “Haven Traditions” during the first week of classes. These events are strong LHU traditions that aid in bringing together the student body, regardless of your major.

These events began on August 21, with the New (Academic) Year’s Eve event. This event heavily resembles a typical New Year’s Eve party at the University Commons, where there’s music, food, drinks, and games to be had by all.

On Wednesday, August 24, was the Sex Ed Boot Camp in Price Auditorium. Dr. Joni Frater & Esther Lastique hosted the event where they educated students about the importance of safe sex, how to practice it and what to do if you have an STI. The hosts also incorporated comedy within the show, which created a more lighthearted tone for the students in attendance.

Thursday, August 25, held our favorite events for us at the Eagle Eye. The Involvement Fair was held from 11-2 on Ivy Lane, and the turnout was impressive compared to what we saw during the last academic year. So many students came out to take a look at the many clubs and social groups that we have on campus. In speaking with a number of other club representatives, the amount of club growth this year seems to be large, with many students becoming more involved on campus— this seemed to be a struggle for the majority once we returned to campus last fall. Our favorite Haven Tradition, though, is the Color Splash that takes place at the University Commons.

Color Splash is messy, but worth it. When we at the Eagle Eye realized none of us had ever gone, we made it a point to go. Upon arrival, students are given a white t-shirt to really make the colors pop. There’s a square marked in the grass that shows the boundaries of where this event will be held, and students are directed to line up around this boundary. As soon as students are directed to go, colorful chaos begins. There are ketchup bottles littering the ground that are full of colored chalk dust. The second that you’re wielding one, you’re given the power to make a mess of your friends by spraying chalk at them. Just try to avoid the eyes, and maybe the ears!
