Due to the global pandemic, college and universities are limiting the number of students allowed back on campuses this fall; therefore, there is an increase in the number of online learning environments provided.

For students, much like myself, who have their courses all online, this can be an overwhelming experience. Especially, if the courses aren’t being taught on a weekly basis at a scheduled time. If you’re stressed about being successful this semester online, here are some tips provided LHU Health Science professor, Kathleen Allison.

1. Physically and mentally prepare yourself to learn

Before you start studying, working on assignments, or joining a Zoom class, prepare yourself to begin learning. Establish a study space to work in whether it’s a desk or dining room table. Don’t complete school work from your bed. Set up a spot where you can program your brain to begin preparing a mindset for learning, not relaxing. Also, make sure to gather all the necessary materials to complete your assignments.

2. Check-in on a regular basis

Not all professors will send reminder emails about what’s due for the week. Stay informed and updated on what assignments need to be completed by regularly checking D2L and your school email. Try to check these areas at least 3 times on nonconsecutive days. It’s also helpful to turn on text and email notifications to inform yourself on class updates and deadlines.

3. Develop good time-management skills

This is extremely important in order to complete assignments on-time and reduce stress. Be aware of deadlines in advance, and don’t procrastinate. Try creating a schedule to block off time to complete work at certain times. Plan at least two to three three additional hours for studying and assignment time per course credit. (Ex: 3 credit course = 6-9 hours of study/work time). Remove all distractions while working. Don’t forget to take breaks while working. For every hour you work or study, try taking a five to ten minute break.

4. Be engaged during class

If you have synchronous virtual classes, or online classes that meet at a scheduled time, make sure you are actually in class and participating. Attendance still matters in online classes. When in class, be engaged, take notes, and turn off any distractions. If something doesn’t make sense, don’t be afraid to ask questions or set up a meeting time with your professor to clarify things outside of class.

5. Stay healthy

Healthy students are also good learners. Make sure to eat healthy and exercise. It’s also important to get enough sleep each night. For college students, the healthy recommendation for sleep is seven to nine hours. If you find this difficult, take little nap breaks throughout the day to refresh your brain. To prevent stress, try yoga, meditating, or speaking positive mind messages over yourself.
