Coronavirus got you down? Stressed out by the loads of coursework you have this semester? Looking for something fun to do on the weekends while you are waiting for life to get back to normal? Even though the pandemic is still going strong, you do not have to put a halt to your social life because of it. If you are looking for some fun activities to do this month while staying safe, check out these five fall and Halloween inspired ideas!
Attend a fall festival hosted by a local farm: If you are looking for a fun fall-related activity, look no farther than a fall festival. Many local farms host seasonal festivities for the surrounding communities. For a relatively low cost, you can visit a local farm and partitake in various activities including hayrides, corn mazes, bonfires, apple picking, and visiting a pumpkin patch. They also serve as great photo-ops for your Instagram profiles! Due to COVID-19, most farms are recommending attendees to wear masks, use hand sanitizer, and safely distance themselves from others.
Carve or decorate pumpkins: If you are looking for an inexpensive yet fun fall activity, try decorating or carving a pumpkin! This time of year you can find a pumpkin almost anywhere for just a few dollars. If you do not plan on going to a pumpkin patch this fall, stores like Walmart, Weis, Sam’s Club, and Home Depot sell different sized pumpkins in large quantities ranging from $3 to $7. You can also purchase a pumpkin at a local country market or greenhouse. Now that you have it, what is a pumpkin without decorating it? Do not let your creativity be inhibited here. There are plenty of supplies (many of which you already have at home) that can go into creating a great looking pumpkin! You can purchase a decorating kit at a local store, make your own carving stencil, or free hand draw with markers.
Go for a hike: Fall is one of the perfect times to go hiking. It is absolutely beautiful outside as the leaves change colors and the weather begins cooling down. Plus, hiking serves as a great form of exercise. This time of year is great for people who enjoy being active outside, but hate the humidity of summer. Try visiting a local state park or hiking area within your hometown. If you are in Lock Haven, challenge yourself to walk up to the Hyner overlook instead of driving. Or you can simply take a walk safely through the woods. Just do not forget to bring water!
Make a DIY Halloween costume: If you still plan on trick-or-treating or hosting a small Halloween party this year, consider making your costume instead of purchasing a new one. Adult Halloween costumes can cost a lot of money – something most college students do not have. Try piecing some of your staple wardrobe items together to create a fun costume. For instance, take a buffalo plaid shirt, your favorite pair of jeans, and Timbs to create a chic lumberjack costume. Or, if you have an animal themed or character onesie, that also works great as a costume. If you need some inspiration, Pinterest is full of wonderful ideas!
Try some new fall or Halloween-themed recipes: Fall also issues in a season of baking. If you need something to do with your roommates on a Saturday night, scroll through Pinterest and find some fun fall or Halloween-themed recipes to try. Whether it is a DIY version of Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte or Frankenstein inspired Rice Krispy Treats, the possibilities are endless! If you love how it turned out, share it on your social media feed encouraging others to have some fun and try the recipe.
