Candy is at the top of every kid’s (and college student’s) Halloween wish-list. However, what makes or breaks a treasured trick-or-treating experience is the kind of candy that is handed out.
We want good candy. The Reese’s Cups. The Hershey chocolate bars. The Snickers. You will never find those treats left over in the candy stash. Avoid a spooky disaster this fall by checking out the compromised lists of the best and worst Halloween candy of 2021.
Online candy wholesaler, Candy Store ranked America’s favorite Halloween treats along with each of the 50 states in late September. To calculate the results, Candy Store used data to determine how many pounds of candy the company sold in the last 14 years. An interactive map was included on the company’s website showcasing the top-three favorite Halloween candies for every U.S. state.
Reese’s Cups are the number one purchased candy, according to Candy Store’s research. Thus, making them America’s most popular Halloween treat. Also making the top-five list includes Skittles, M&M’s, Starburst, and Hot Tamales.
America’s Top 10 Halloween Candies:
- Reese’s Cups
- Skittles
- M&M’s
- Starburst
- Hot Tamales
- Sour Patch Kids
- Hershey Kisses
- Snickers
- Tootsie Pops
- Candy Corn
Despite Reese’s Cups overall popularity, the ever-favorited treat did not win the popularity contest for the most U.S. states. Rather, Reese’s Cups tied with Sour Patch Kids and Starburst to be the most purchased candies among six different states. Reese’s are popular within California, Wyoming, Kansas, Kentucky, Florida, and North Carolina. Sour Patch Kids are favored in Nebraska, Arkansas, Illinois, New York, Massachusetts, and Maine. And, Starburst holds the number one spot in Idaho, South Dakota, Texas, Starburst, Indiana, and Alabama. For the full results, visit Candy Store’s website and check out its interactive map featuring each state’s favorite and most purchased candies.
Candy Store also conducted a survey this fall to determine America’s overall best and worst Halloween candies. The company surveyed over 17,000 of its customers, asking them about their favorite and least favorite Halloween treats. Reese’s Cups rained supreme as the most beloved Halloween candy among surveyed Americans. If you have not yet decided on what yummy treats to hand out this Halloween, take a look at the following list:

Despite the national debate over candy corn’s goodness, it proves to have a love-hate relationship with Americans. While it is the tenth most purchased Halloween treat, candy corn earned a top spot as the most unfavored Halloween candy. With Allhallows Eve being right around the corner, the Eagle Eye staff advises its readers to avoid buying the following candies to prevent unhappy trick-or-treaters this year:
