For Homecoming week at the Lock Haven campus, the Haven Activities Council put together a “Happy Hour Lawn Party,” from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the University Commons. Students, alumni, and all of their families could get free ice cream at the Bruster’s Ice Cream truck, try out the inflatable wipeout jump bar, play a few games of corn hole, dance, and listen to the latest pop hits. At the Alumni Pavilion, free hot dogs and pretzels were available too.

After you were able to eat, play, and socialize, Lock Haven’s annual Golf Cart Parade kicked off at 6 p.m. The theme for the parade was “Haven and Homecoming in Harmony.” A plethora of carts emerged from North Fairview St. and made their way down to Ivy Lane.

Students and members of the community were lined up along the sidewalks patiently waiting to see the decorated carts. Children had their bags ready to store their collected candy and phones were ready to capture the enchanting designs. Those riding these carts included students, faculty members, and alumni.

Officer Derrick Zettle, a 2017 Lock Haven alumnus, watched the Golf Cart parade when he was an attending student. He’s since watched this parade a few times while working in Lock Haven, and when asked about his favorite part of the parade, he said it was “the creativity.”

There was an impressive display of creativity showcased in this parade and a great deal of effort was prevalent. Megan Mengel and Caroline Nagle, members of Alpha Sigma Tau, said they knew there was going to be a lot of female carts. They wanted to make sure that their cart stood out and that the theme of their cart was true to them and what their respected organization stood for. After considering many ideas, “Legally Blonde: The Musical” made the cut. They connected with how in both their lives, and in the life of Elle Woods, sororities empower their sisters and other women.

Other participating members in the parade, seniors Madison Niebauer and Esther Rodriguez, based their design on the movie “Pitch Perfect” as they felt the film strongly related to the assigned theme of harmony. To incorporate the university, they recreated the mascot, Talon, into their cart design. When asked if they had any favorite carts, aside from their own, they answered with the “Shrek” themed cart.

The Homecoming Lawn Party and Golf Cart parade was filled with smiles, food, sweet treats, and decorated golf carts. This event continues to unify the Lock Haven campus, community, friends, and families from far and wide.
