LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven women’s basketball concluded their historic regular season on Saturday, March 2, in a dominant victory on senior day over the Millersville Marauders (12-16). The Bald Eagles (26-2) cruised to an easy 58-37 victory, tying the program record for 26 wins in a season. This year has been nothing short of magical for the Lady Eagles, going on an incredible 19-game win streak, and easily capturing the No. 1 seed in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference‘s (PSAC) Eastern Division.
“It’s been a really special season with this record we have put together,” Lock Haven’s head coach Jennifer Smith. “We have just taken it one game at a time we haven’t really thought about what we accomplished it’s just been about showing up every day.”
After an impressive 26-2 regular season, Lock Haven will turn their sights to the PSAC Playoffs, having a bye week before facing the lowest remaining seed in the quarterfinals.
Lock Haven has had major contributions all year from their two standout sophomores, Jenadia Jordan and Alana Robinson. Jordan led The Haven in scoring this year, averaging 15.5 PPG while also dishing out 2.5 assists. On the defensive end, no player in Bald Eagle history has been as good as Robinson in her career. In just two seasons, Robinson has set the all-time block record for women’s basketball and set the record for blocks in a season both years. Robinson averaged an astounding 2.4 blocks per game, while also adding 14 PPG.
Robinson and Jordan haven’t been the only contributors this year. Freshman Rhlyn Rouse, Graduate students Taylor Leidy and Jackie Fetsko, and Junior’s Olivia Smith and Carly Fitzmorris have all been key players for the Bald Eagles this season.
“This season has been a fever dream kind of,” Leidy said. “It’s been so cool playing with people I love as long as I have. We worked so hard to get to this point and it’s so rewarding to be where we are at.”
Before tip-off, Lock Haven had a ceremony to celebrate their five seniors in their final regular-season game in Thomas Fieldhouse. Leidy, Fetsko, Kylie Metzger, Brooke Lawyer, and Chandler Swanson were all honored for the years of service they have given to the university.
“Taylor and I have been here for a lot of ups and downs,” Fetsko said. “We’ve been here for the seven-game losing streaks, and the 20-game win streaks. To see it all play out our last year has been really cool.”
Being in the playoffs is nothing new for this group. Last season the Lady Eagles finished as the No. 6 seed in the East, before losing by eight in the first round to the Kutztown Golden Bears. Leidy, Fetsko, and the rest of the team seem confident that this year will be different than last.
“We have to have confidence in each other,” Leidy said. “We put in the work, we work hard, and we work together. We know we can go get this.”
Coach Smith and her team will look forward to taking a hard-earned break before suiting up for the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 6 in a rematch against Millersville.
