On Oct. 9, Commonwealth University – Lock Haven’s Haven Cupboard hosted an open house at their new location in the East Campus Science Center replacing the former NanoBites Café. Previously, the Haven Cupboard was located at the Beth Yehuda Synagogue at 320 W. Church St.

In Oct. 2019, Amy Downes, the director of the Haven Cupboard, and student workers began this program with the mission of providing fresh produce and non-perishable foods to students. Every week, an email is sent out to students who fill out the form with details on their food supply available to pick up. Students are advised to bring a reusable bag to hold all the groceries.

In an effort to accommodate all students’ dietary needs, their food pantry offers products that are safe for those who don’t consume dairy, gluten or meat. There are options for anyone facing hunger on campus.

“The cupboard has shown me that it is okay to reach out for help when you need it. It’s such a nonjudgmental space staffed by the nicest people,” said Alison Rancont, a junior Media & Journalism major. “I know that I’ll never not have something for dinner.”

Anyone who wants to donate to the Cupboard can do so during their hours of operation or digitally through the Lock Haven University Foundation. More donations equals more food provided to the campus community, preventing food insecurity on campus.

Another form of contribution would be to purchase something from their Amazon wishlist. Any student interested in the services offered by the Haven Cupboard may stop by in person or reach out via email HavenCupboard@lockhaven.edu.

The Haven Cupboard’s current hours of operation are Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. and Thursday from 1-2 p.m. and 5-6:30 p.m.
