Trailer of Sofia Coppola’s biographic film “Priscilla” released on Oct. 3, 2023

[Warning: This review contains spoilers.]

From the perspective of Priscilla Presley, “Priscilla,” directed by Sofia Coppola, and released on Nov. 3, 2023, offers an intimate portrayal of the iconic 1960s celebrity couple, Elvis and Priscilla. Drawing from Priscilla’s own narrative in her book “Elvis and Me,” the film provides a distinctive behind-the-scenes look at their love story.

The movie spans two hours, focusing primarily on Priscilla’s journey from an enamored young fan to Elvis’s wife and the mother of his child, Lisa Presley. Coppola uses Priscilla’s voice to guide the narrative, offering viewers a glimpse into the challenges and experiences Priscilla faced while dating the infamous king of rock and roll.

A striking aspect of the film is its portrayal of Priscilla’s character development. Initially depicted as a young, innocent girl, she undergoes a profound transformation throughout the narrative, evolving into a woman who confidently asserts her independence and identity. The film’s recurring medium full-shots of Priscilla navigating through hallways, skillfully capturing her evolution.

From her adoption of the iconic beehive hair and heavy eye makeup, reminiscent of Elvis’s idealized image, to a subtle yet significant shift towards a more natural appearance in the 1970s, Priscilla’s journey reflects a quiet defiance against the confines of his influence.

“Priscilla” doesn’t shy away from portraying the darker aspects of fame, particularly in its portrayal of Elvis’s temperament and control over Priscilla. The gradual escalation of his dominance over her is a central theme, culminating in Priscilla’s decision to break free from his influence.

One of the most memorable scenes is the film’s conclusion, where Priscilla drives away from Graceland, symbolizing her liberation from Elvis’s control. It’s a powerful moment that encapsulates her journey towards self-discovery and empowerment.

The couple’s 10-year age gap underscores Elvis’s older, more experienced status and his choice to pursue a relationship with the teenage fangirl, Priscilla. For modern audiences, this dynamic raises questions about the once-idolized couple and evokes sympathy for Priscilla, while also serving as a reminder of the importance of strength in leaving unhealthy situations.

Cailee Spaeny‘s portrayal of Priscilla and Jacob Elordi‘s depiction of Elvis are noteworthy for breathing life into their iconic relationship through their commendable performances. Elordi’s impression of Elvis exceeded my expectations, especially when compared to Austin Butler’s version in the biographical film “Elvis” by Baz Luhrmann released in 2022.

The film delves into the complexities of love and personal growth, acknowledging the enduring bond between Priscilla and Elvis while also highlighting the transformative power of divorce. It explores how people can grow apart and evolve individually, echoing the sentiment that divorce allowed Priscilla to become her own person while still holding love for Elvis.

“Priscilla” delves deep into the story of the legendary couple, blending elements of romance, drama, and contemplation that sheds new light on their relationship dynamics with Priscilla’s side being acknowledged. It’s a compelling watch that prompts viewers to reflect on themes of identity, self-empowerment, and the price of fame.

Final Rating – 9.2/10
