Starting fresh for the fourth time, Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is back with a new identity searching for the “one” in Europe. Released on Feb. 9, season four of “You” has a total of 10 episodes split into two parts. The second part of the season premiered March 9 on Netflix.
Initially, Joe moved to London to rekindle his love with Marienne Bellamy, the woman who he planned to leave his wife Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) for in season three. Marienne rejects Joe after finding out about his murderous past and flees Europe to get away from him.
In an act of proving his love, Joe does not kill Marienne or stop her from boarding the train to leave London.
Fans of the series were perplexed by Joe’s decision of letting Marienne live due to his history of murdering all those past love interests. A common thing for Joe to do is collect something valuable to his victims. In the case of Marienne, Joe took her heart locket necklace with a picture of her daughter in it.
There have been many changes in Joe’s life since the end of the show’s third season. Now living in London, Joe goes by the name Jonathan Moore, an American Literature professor.
After Joe’s job interview for his teaching position, he meets and reluctantly befriends a professor, Malcolm Harding, who lives across from Joe’s apartment complex. Joe’s first thought when he entered his neighborhood, as seen in episode one, was “I’m in a Hugh Grant movie.”
Malcolm is responsible for introducing Joe to his new crowd of friends and a new love interest. Joe’s current friend group, composed of privileged and inherently wealthy and famous individuals, consists of the following:
- Blessing Bosede (Ozioma Whenu) — a Nigerian princess who is also a snobby business woman, specializes in technology.
- Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers) — an author of the popular memoir “A Good Man in a Cruel World” who is also running for London mayor. He can relate to Joe because of their shared rough childhoods and less-than-party-animal lifestyles.
- Kate Galvin (Charlotte Ritchie) — a quite reserved, workaholic art gallery director, who dates and lives with Malcolm. Joe has undeniable feelings for Kate and wants to protect her after saving her from thieves.
- Roald Burton (Ben Wiggins) — a close friend of Kate who does not take kindly to Joe and keeps his guard around him.
- Gemma Graham-Greene (Eve Austin) — a boastful social elite, who isn’t afraid to be blunt or ask the questions everyone wants to know about somebody.
- Lady Phoebe Borehall-Blaxworth (Tilly Keeper) — London’s sweetheart and social elite that knows every detail about everyone living in Soho and eagerly wants to learn more about Joe. She is also close friends with Kate.
- Adam Pratt (Lukas Gage) — the owner of the A-lister club Sundry House who enjoys gambling away his inherited fortune. He dates Lady Phoebe and has the picture-perfect romance according to the tabloids.
- Sophie Soo (Niccy Lin) — a social media content creator with a degree in law from Harvard University. She is also the older sister of Simon.
- Simon Soo (Aidan Cheng) — an egotistical, famous artist and model with a large fanbase in London.
Joe’s so-called quiet and peaceful life takes a turn for the worst after a long bender of drinking absinthe and tolerating the snobs at the Sundry House. He wakes up to a lifeless Malcolm on his kitchen table who was stabbed with a knife and missing a finger.
After the unexpected murder of Malcolm, Joe begins to deal with torment from the “Eat the rich” killer as more of the rich population dies off unexpectedly in Soho. The killer uses blackmail to make Joe do his dirty work throughout the season.
No longer is Joe in control or the main antagonist. He becomes trapped in another murderous cycle in order to prevent the killer from exposing his past.
This leads to a total of four murders by the end of part one. The first victim is Malcolm, followed by Simon Soo, Adam’s bodyguard Vic, and lastly Gemma. Only one of the victims was killed by Joe, the rest were by the mysterious killer, who is revealed in episode five.
Viewers are wondering if there are any more places that Joe can go to escape and soon, he must face the consequences of his killing sprees.
Possibly in part two of the season, Joe’s lucky streak will end, and he may finally serve time for the murders and accompanying the “Eat the Rich” killer.
