The Communication Awards Ceremony, formerly known as the Rebecca Gross Awards, was hosted by Lambda Pi Eta, the Communication Honors Society, to recognize the accomplishments of communication students and alumni on April 21 from
12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center (DACC). Six awards were given out to students and one to an alumnus of the program.

According to Communication Studies professor Dr. Matthew Girton, the Rebecca Gross Awards started in 1981 as a way to “recognize the outstanding work our students do as well as recognize alumni.” This was also the first year that the ceremony was hosted by Lambda Pi Eta.

This year’s alumni winner is Jason Beach Miller, who graduated from the communication program in 2006. He currently serves as the Vice President of Customer and Segment Strategy for Highmark, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to a $500 monetary award, Beach Miller also received a commemorative Lock Haven University pen set and paperweight.

The Dr. Saundra K. Memorial Hybels Award is given to one communication student from the freshman, sophomore and
junior class. Award winners are students who excel in their chosen media field: Mass Communication and Journalism, are
involved in the community of LHU, and have a minimum of 2.5 GPA. Daniel Stoner, rising sophomore, Alison Rancont, rising
junior, and Ashley Lawson, rising senior, all received the Hybels Awards.

The Lisa Riede Award, which is given to the communication student with the greatest GPA, was presented to junior Organizational Communication major Whitney Harshberger. Lizabeth Kasmer was gifted the Margaret Ann Brown Scholarship, an award that recognizes a junior media student with the highest GPA.

Concluding the ceremony, Dalton Fisher received the Rebecca Gross Outstanding Senior award, a recognition of a senior student with at least a GPA of 3.0 and is active in on and off-campus clubs or activities.
