For some, listening to music works as a comforting outlet during the more unfortunate life stages such as a failed romantic interest or losing a family member. Life is full of unexpected events and whether negative or positive, these things shape the way one views themselves and the world around them. This playlist features five songs that, when listened to, can help ease and comfort those who are going through hard times.

“Wheels in the Sky” – Journey

Regardless of what events are going on in someone’s life, time will not wait for anyone to make decisions. The concept of time can be intimidating for those who don’t have a sense of direction or are still figuring out who they are. Released in 1978, “Wheels in the Sky” serves as a good reminder to use your time on Earth wisely because tomorrow isn’t promised for everyone.

“Runaway Runaway” – Mars Argo

“Runaway Runaway” is about a person who feels like they are losing control of themselves due to uncontrollable outside factors ,and coming to terms about how unpredictable the future is. The lyrics, “Am I living an illusion?…I want to runaway, runaway, runaway,” describes urgency to escape situations when they don’t go as previously planned. This song is relatable for those who may feel the need to conform to the “right” way of life resulting in never living their own version.

“Safe and Sound” – Capital Cities

By pressing play on the song, listeners are transported to happier times like reminiscing about summertime. The opening segment alone is enough to pull anyone out of a state of sadness with its use of upbeat techno beats blended with the ongoing trumpet riff. Another comforting factor is the background chorus repetition of the lyrics “safe and sound,” which is reminiscent of a parent comforting their children with a subtle soft voice.

“The Number You Have Dialed Is Not in Service” – $UICIDEBOY$

Compared to previous releases by this duo, this song stands out because they describe how they want to get help from a therapist to better themselves rather than going untreated and hiding in the shadows of the dark parts in life since that prolongs misery. In a chant-like sequence, the song ends with encouraging lyrics, “When life gets hard, Keep on marchin’ on/Even if the finish line is far or you have to push the car,” as a way to remind listeners that they are worthy of being alive.

“After the Storm” – Kali Uchis feat. Tyler, The Creator & Bootsy Collins

There will be some days where it feels like a dark cloud follows our every direction or yearning for a savior or hero. By opening your mind to the possibility that things will get better can be a form of manifestation that will soon come true. This song recognizes that everyone is battling their own demons and the only person who can truly save them is themselves, “If you need a hero, just look in the mirror.” Remember that “after the storm is when the flowers will bloom,” and the worst thing to do is not try to help yourself recover.

Listeners should gravitate towards these song selections when missing someone who’s deceased or reminiscing about memories with exes or old friends.
