Santa Clara, Calif. – The San Francisco 49ers hosted the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night (Nov. 13). The Chargers (5-4) jumped out to a 13-3 lead, but the 49ers (5-4) out-scored the Chargers 19-3 to grab the 22-16 victory. 

The Chargers got things going early on a seven-play, 75-yard opening drive. Quarterback Justin Herbert connected with wide receiver DeAndre Carter for a 32-yard touchdown giving the Chargers an early 7-0 lead.

The 49ers added a 20-yard field goal by Robbie Gould on their opening possession. 

On the 49ers next possession, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk fumbled the ball after a hit by Chargers safety Derwin James. Asante Samuel recovered the ball for Los Angeles at the 49ers’ 32-yard line. The fumble led to a 47-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker. 

The Chargers received the ball at San Francisco’s 46-yard line after a blocked punt. Herbert connected with Carter on a 33-yard pass down to the Niners’ two-yard line. Dicker made a 25-yard field goal giving the Chargers a 13-3 lead with 6:44 remaining in the first half. 

San Francisco responded with a nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hit wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud for 33-yards to cross over into Charger territory. Garoppolo then punched it in from the one-yard line making the score 13-10 with just under two minutes to go in the first half. 

The Chargers received the ball back and were down to the Niners 20-yard line after a Herbert scramble. A flag was tacked on after a questionable unnecessary roughness penalty after helmet-to-helmet contact between Herbert and 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw. Greenlaw was ejected. The Chargers tacked on a 40-yard field goal by Dicker to grab a 16-10 lead at halftime. 

The 49ers tacked on a 26-yard field goal by Gould on their opening possession of the second half. The Niners then went on a 15-play, 77-yard scoring drive. The ball was down at the Charger’s two-yard line when running back Christian McCaffrey punched it in giving the Niners a 19-16 lead after a missed extra point with 7:54 left to play. 

The Niners received the ball back on LA’s eight-yard line after a turnover on downs. Gould connected on a 20-yard field goal. The Chargers received the ball back with 53 seconds to go. On the first play Herbert was picked off by defensive end Charles Omenihu to seal the game for the Niners.

NINER DEFENSE:

The 49ers held the Chargers to just 51 rushing yards on the night.
